New Delhi: India and Canada on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to reinvigorating bilateral trade and investment relations during the 7th Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) held in New Delhi.
The meeting was co-chaired by Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal and Canada’s minister of export promotion Maninder Sidhu, marking what both sides described as a renewed phase of engagement aimed at setting a forward-looking agenda for cooperation.
The discussions built on the joint statement titled ‘Renewing Momentum towards a Stronger Partnership’ issued on October 13, 2025, which had identified trade as the cornerstone of bilateral economic growth and resilience.
In a joint statement following the dialogue, the ministers reaffirmed the enduring strength of the India-Canada relationship, anchored in shared democratic values, cultural diversity, and economic complementarities.
They also acknowledged the crucial role of the Indian diaspora in Canada — nearly 2.9 million people, including over 427,000 Indian students — in deepening people-to-people and economic ties.
Bilateral trade in goods and services between the two countries reached $18.38 billion in 2023, while two-way investments have shown steady growth. Both ministers reiterated their commitment to fostering an open, transparent, and predictable business environment to support sustainable and inclusive growth.
The dialogue covered a wide-ranging agenda including collaboration in nutritional security, supply chain resilience, health sector cooperation, and investment facilitation. The ministers also reviewed recent trade policy developments and discussed ways to enhance market access, align regulations, and strengthen long-term economic resilience.
Both sides agreed to translate the discussions into tangible outcomes that advance shared prosperity and reflect the depth and dynamism of India-Canada relations. “The dialogue marks an important step towards renewing and revitalizing our economic partnership, grounded in mutual respect, trust, and collaboration,” the ministers said in a joint statement.
