New Delhi: In a major achievement, India has crossed the one-billion-tonne coal production mark for the second consecutive year, reinforcing its position as a rapidly advancing, self-reliant energy economy.
The country reached this milestone on March 20, recording its highest-ever coal production of 1,048 million tonnes in the 2024–25 financial year, a development that reflects strong operational efficiency, policy support, and coordinated execution across the coal value chain.
“This significant milestone underscores India’s growing self-reliance in the energy sector and its commitment to ensuring an uninterrupted fuel supply to key industries,” the Ministry of Coal said in a statement. The government emphasized that sustained increases in coal output have played a critical role in meeting rising energy demand while enabling thermal power plants to maintain robust stock levels.
Coal availability remains comfortable across the system. As of March, India maintains a robust coal position, with over 53.41 million tonnes (MT) at thermal power plants—sufficient for nearly 23 days of consumption—and an overall 88-day supply. In addition, pithead reserves at captive and commercial mines stand at around 147 million tonnes, further supported by stocks in transit, ports, and storage facilities. Earlier this month, the government also recorded 200 million tonnes of coal production from commercial and captive mines, indicating strong momentum in the sector.
The current stock levels align with the normative requirement of 20–23 days needed for smooth operations at an 85% load factor, highlighting a significant improvement in supply chain resilience and planning.
Coal plays a critical role as a stable baseload energy source, essential for meeting continuous demand across industries, urban centres, and rural areas. Coal-fired power plants remain central to addressing these peak requirements, especially during the summer months, while also supporting core sectors such as steel and cement, which are vital to India’s economic growth.
The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to fostering a stable, transparent, and performance-driven ecosystem. Through proactive policy interventions, rigorous performance monitoring, and close stakeholder engagement, the government aims to ensure reliable coal availability and seamless operations across sectors.
Aligned with the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’, these developments reinforce India’s resolve to build a resilient energy framework, enhance domestic production capabilities, and support sustainable economic development while ensuring energy security for the future.
