The Centre has dismissed links between ethanol diversion and sugar price hikes, citing crop disease and weather factors while launching stock checks to curb hoarding.

Amid growing concerns over rising domestic prices, the Indian government has assured that sugar stocks in the country remain adequate. As authorities move to manage market availability and price stability, officials have stepped up efforts to address the underlying causes of the recent market volatility, countering widespread speculation regarding the factors driving up costs.

Debunking the Ethanol Diversion Link

Addressing public and market concerns, the Centre has explicitly stated that it is incorrect to link the recent sugar price hike to the diversion of sugarcane for ethanol production.

Instead, the government attributes the upward pressure on prices to agricultural setbacks. Officials have blamed crop challenges, specifically Red Rot, Top Borer disease, and extensive waterlogging, for impacting overall production yields.

Cracking Down on Hoarding and Profiteering

In tandem with clarifying the supply situation, regulatory measures are expanding on the ground. According to reports, government teams have launched stock checks to verify inventories and actively curb hoarding as prices register increases. States have similarly been directed to step up administrative action. Simultaneously, the Centre has issued clear warnings to sugar mills against engaging in profiteering amidst these market pressures.
