New Delhi: In a landmark development for the state, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy, along with Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu, on Monday inaugurated the Namchik Namphuk coal mine in Changlang district, marking the launch of the state’s first commercial coal mining project. The event is being hailed as a major step in positioning Arunachal Pradesh on India’s coal and energy map.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional Bhumi Pujan, performed by the Union minister and chief minister, followed by a tree plantation drive under the “100-tree plantation initiative” at the project site. The inauguration also witnessed the formal handover of the mining lease and the flagging off of CPPL’s mining tools and machinery to the Namchik Namphuk central coal block, officially commencing mining operations.

Addressing the gathering, Reddy underscored the project’s strategic importance, describing the launch as “a symbol of new hope and a significant step toward energy security and regional development in the North East”. He highlighted that the mine holds coal reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes and has become operational immediately, reinforcing India’s energy self-reliance.

Khandu emphasized the socio-economic benefits of the initiative, noting that the Namchik Namphuk coal mine will boost the state’s economy, create employment opportunities, and generate steady revenue. He expressed confidence that the project will empower local communities and attract further investments in Arunachal Pradesh’s mining and industrial sectors.

Officials noted that the Namchik Namphuk coal mine is poised to play a pivotal role in the development of the North East region. Beyond driving local industrial growth and employment, the mine is expected to strengthen India’s energy security and contribute to the nation’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

This inauguration marks a historic milestone for Arunachal Pradesh, signalling a new era of economic growth, industrial development and regional empowerment.
