The Colombian Foreign Ministry announced the decision on Monday, stating: "Colombia recognises Israeli sovereignty over the Golan."
The ministry said the decision was driven by the continuing instability in the Middle East and the strategic importance of the Golan Heights to Israel's security. It also recognised Israel's right to defend itself against external threats.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed the territory. However, most of the international community has not recognised Israeli sovereignty over the area and continues to consider it Syrian territory under Israeli occupation.
Colombia's decision therefore represents a sharp break from the long-standing international position and signals a significant change in Bogotá's approach to the Middle East.
