Opposition MPs belonging to the INDIA bloc began a high-profile "Save Democracy" march from Parliament to the Election Commission of India (ECI) office, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. As per reports, the march and subsequent protests were organized to voice strong opposition against alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revisions.
The March and Stalled Protests
Led by prominent opposition figures including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Akhilesh Yadav, the MPs moved out from Parliament towards the ECI headquarters. Catching widespread media attention, Rahul Gandhi was notably heard remarking, “Gyanesh, it’s done, bro” .
The demonstration escalated as security measures intervened. The marching lawmakers were eventually stopped on route, leading them to stage a direct protest on-site to press their demands.
Demands and Core Allegations
The central grievance driving the opposition's march centers on systematic flaws and controversies surrounding recent electoral-roll revisions. The INDIA bloc has leveled sharp criticisms against the poll panel, culminating in the collective demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar to step down from his post.
