The flood situation in northern Odisha has turned grim, forcing authorities to evacuate over 2.37 lakh people as overflowing rivers inundate vast tracts of land. The heavy downpours have driven widespread displacement across the northern districts, with total affected populations estimated between 5 lakh and 5.15 lakh people according to various reports.
Escalating Crisis and Rainfall Anomalies
The ongoing deluge follows an abnormal spike in weather patterns across the region. Cumulative rainfall in the state has remained 27% above normal levels, triggering fresh floods that caught many communities off guard.
The Odisha government remains on high alert following the development of a low-pressure area (LoPAR) over the Bay of Bengal, which threatens to further aggravate the existing flood conditions. State agencies have ramped up preparedness and rescue operations to manage the expanding crisis.
