The renewed crisis follows a dam burst and subsequent breach in Tibet, prompting Chinese warnings of an unfolding tragedy near the border. An overflowing water-barrier lake near the Nepal-China border is holding an estimated 2 million cubic metres of water and continues to receive hazardous further inflows.
As debris-laden water levels surged dangerously high, authorities acted swiftly to safeguard vulnerable populations. According to reports, officials intensified monitoring and alerts along the Bhote Koshi river corridor. The Trishuli river area faced fresh evacuations as the river threat escalated. Concurrently, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck China's Sichuan region, compounding regional anxieties today.
Rescue Operations Disrupted
The mounting hydrological threat has severely impacted ongoing humanitarian efforts on the ground. Emergency rescue operations had to be temporarily halted for 90 minutes as the fresh wave of floodwaters raced down the river channels, forcing rescue teams to retreat to safety before resuming work.
