In a major blow to transnational drug syndicates, the Indian Coast Guard, working in coordination with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), intercepted an Iranian dhow in the Arabian Sea and seized narcotics valued at over ₹3,000 crore. According to reports, the high-seas operation highlights the continued vigilance of Indian maritime security agencies along western shipping routes.
Joint Operation and Contraband Details
The joint interdiction was executed following actionable intelligence gathered by security agencies. The targeted vessel was intercepted west of Lakshadweep.
Upon searching the Iranian dhow, law enforcement personnel discovered a massive cache of contraband weighing approximately 526 kg. The seized narcotics comprised high-value substances, specifically heroin and methamphetamine, underscoring the scale of the illicit trafficking operation intercepted by the authorities.
Detentions and Subsequent Investigation
During the operation, security forces apprehended five individuals aboard the vessel. All five detained suspects are Pakistani nationals.
Following the interception on September 25, the maritime agency escorted both the seized Iranian dhow and the detained crew members to Mumbai. The vessel and the narcotics were brought ashore to facilitate further comprehensive investigations and initiate formal legal proceedings against the suspects.
