India's food regulator FSSAI has proposed a nationwide ban on manufacturing and selling non-dairy analogue products under the name paneer, following various state-level bans.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated a major regulatory push to protect consumers and dairy standards. As per reports, the food safety watchdog has proposed a nationwide prohibition on the manufacture and sale of non-dairy analogue items marketed under the guise of traditional dairy products.

Crackdown on Analogue 'Paneer' Labeling

Under the newly proposed regulations, non-dairy substitute items will no longer be permitted to utilize the "paneer" label. This sweeping federal initiative follows a series of earlier state-level restrictions aimed at curbing the deceptive marketing of plant-based or alternative fat substitutes.

The regulatory measure directly targets analogue products, items designed to resemble dairy paneer using vegetable fats, starches, and other non-milk constituents, preventing them from capitalizing on the established trust and nutritional identity associated with genuine dairy paneer.

Public Consultation and Implementation Timeline

To ensure transparency and invite stakeholder feedback, the apex food regulator has opened the proposal to public scrutiny. According to reports, the authority has instituted a 60-day consultation period allowing industry participants, consumer advocacy groups, and the public to review the new rules before final implementation.

During this window, stakeholders can submit their evaluations regarding the proposed manufacturing and sales curbs.

Implications for the Food and Dairy Sector

The proposed nationwide restrictions mark a decisive step toward eliminating consumer confusion in the dairy aisle. By enforcing stricter nomenclature standards, the FSSAI aims to draw a clear line between authentic dairy products derived from milk and synthetic or plant-based alternatives.
