The Union Cabinet has greenlit a massive infrastructure push worth ₹13,041 crore, encompassing major railway and highway projects spread across five states, according to recent reports. The financial allocation is geared toward transforming regional connectivity and upgrading vital transportation arteries.
Railway Multitracking and Corridor Expansions
A substantial portion of the approved package focuses on railway development. The Cabinet cleared four railway multitracking projects valued at ₹9,450 crore spanning four states.
Key among these railway initiatives is the quadrupling of the Howrah-Chennai line, which includes railway multitracking extending from Kharagpur to Paradeep. These enhancements are designed to ease congestion and improve freight and passenger transit efficiency along vital economic corridors.
Highway Upgrades and Regional Impacts
Alongside the rail initiatives, the Cabinet approved a significant highway upgrade. According to reports, the package features a ₹3,591-crore Bihar highway upgrade, specifically targeting the NH-22 corridor.
The broader infrastructure drive directly impacts several key regions. The five major infrastructure projects are slated to benefit states including Bihar, Odisha, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, driving localized economic growth and modernizing transit networks.
